One thing is for sure, summer is here on the Space Coast. We know that you value your time and money so here are some great ways to beat the heat this year:

Beef Up Your Windows

Heat can enter (and escape) your home through your windows, a tremendous amount, in fact, depending on the state of your current windows. According to Energy Star, you can save close to $200 a year by upgrading your single or double paned windows to energy efficient models.

Dress Up Your Windows

Did you know that up to 30% of the heat that enters your home comes from the windows? You can do even more to help keep your house cool by adding items like blinds, drapes, and blackout curtains. This will help keep the cool air in and the warm air out. Not only will blinds and curtains give a decorative touch to your home, they will keep the light at bay and can reduce the temperature within your home quite a bit.

Enjoy the Night

While the days may be blistering, evenings on the coast feel quite lovely. You can always take advantage of the cooler evening temperatures by opening windows and utilizing fans. This is a great way to bring the outdoors inside and still keeping your home cool. If you do choose to open up your home, make sure you have screens on your windows so critters don’t rush in to enjoy the ambiance too.

It’s tempting to turn the AC way down when you are feeling hot but keeping it at a steady temperature somewhere between 70-75 when your home is inhabited is the best idea. When everyone leaves for the day, have your thermostat set to around 80. The reason for this is because it is not efficient for your cooling system to have to lower the temperature from scratch. It works much better, and cost less, to keep settings at a reasonable temperature.
